A Great Weekend for Music in Bellingham

Helms Alee put out one of my favorite records of last year, so seeing them at Cap Hansen's (a very small bar here in town where I was lucky to see Monotonix twice) on Saturday is going to be incredible. I hope to grab a copy of their new 7" for less than $9.00 (yikes). Get there early if you want to be sure a spot inside. Plus, Police Teeth (ex USS Horsewhip, Racetrack) is rad too. And I hear this is might be their CD release show.

Tonight a bunch of awesome locals are playing a Whatcom All-ages Art and Music (WhAAM) benefit show. Check out Connecticut Four, they are my favorite from the bunch.

Plus last night I got to see Akimbo on WWU's campus, who performed their epic masterpiece "Jersey Shores" from start to finish. I like the album, but seeing it live was a whole new experience. Those guys are very talented musicians; especially the guitarist. That guy can shred. I think the high school kids in attendance were either bored, or their minds were blown. I hope for the latter.

David Bazan to Play House Shows

David Bazan (Pedro the Lion's frontman) wants to get back to performing in a more intimate setting, so he is staring the year with a house show tour, letting fans apply to host shows for him to perform at. Seems like an awesome deal with one catch; tickets are $20. I know it sounds like a lot, but it makes sense due to the fact that he could be making more on a club tour (he is on Barsuk after all), and this would be a huge treat to his die-hard fans. If I still lived in a huge house in Bellingham like I did a few years ago, I'd be totally down for this. Especially since I don't think I've seen him perform since my early college years (as Pedro the Lion).

Check out more info here. Anyone hosting a show must sign this contract.

President Obama's First Weekly Address

I am totally digging this! For the first time, I plan on actually following what our President and what congress is doing. I really hope Obama and his administration are able to follow these ambitious plans.

Flooding

The flooding here has been pretty crazy. I've never seen the rivers so high. Some of the locals in Ferndale are saying the Nooksack is higher than it's ever been. I guess it's the Northwest's turn to feel some effects of the climate change. First crazy snow, now this.

Here are some of my favorite images on the Bellingham Herald's site.

My Top Albums of 2008

Let me preface the list by saying that this is the first time I've ever attempted to rank my top albums of the year.
